I’ve purchased a number of things from the iTunes Store. Music and TV shows primarily, and I’ve been pretty happy with the ease of use and quality of my purchases… The problem i have, though, is that television shows such as Lost, which are broadcast in a 16×9 aspect ration HD, when purchased from the iTunes Store, are only 4×3.
Along with some nice random thoughts on Jobs’ open letter on DRM, Erik J. Barzeski writes, “DRM has never bitten me in the butt.”
( NSLog: “Jobs’ Open Letter on DRM” )
I, on the other hand, have been bitten by Fairplay DRM… but they’re only minor annoyances:
- Fairplay makes it difficult to listen to my purchased music on my phone (which i use basically like a 1GB Shuffle when i am without my ipod.) I am required to burn a CD then re-encode… which takes about as much time as pirating it.
- Pulling a 30 second clip out of a fairplay song to use as a ringer on my phone also requires that i first burn and re-encode, then actually do the work of pulling out the clip i want.
I’d really rather just download mp3s, (or non-DRMed AAC). That would simplify everything. (i’d also like to be able to opt-in to High Quality downloads… drive space is not an issue for me, and i like my AACs at at least 192. (really i prefer mp3s at 320.)
maybe someday.
Rob Enderle is, yet again, desperately begging for hits with another lame anti-Apple article. (i am doing a disservice to you and to myself by linking to this trash.)
I bet there is a very specific template these pundits use to get the mac blogsphere buzzing about the horribly inaccurate article to generate excessive amounts of hits ad impressions. It goes something like this:
The Hook
Start with a blatantly incorrect and unsubstantiated claim. If possible, follow with selective information that is actually counter to your claim, but write it as if it is supporting.
Shortly after the Apple iPhone was announced, LG electronics, the largest Korean Electronics Manufacturer, announced the Prada which on spec is better than the iPhone and will show up about 4 months sooner and will be more widely available in Europe.
As it turns out, the Prada simply is not better than the iPhone “on spec” – unless of course, Enderle is talking about his own speculation instead of actual specifications. It seems to me that the iPhone is easily better based purely on specifications, and in real world usage, i think the gap between these devices will widen.
He also mentions that it will be available 4 months before the iPhone in Europe, but fails to mention that the iPhone will very likely be available in the US long before the Prada ever is (if it ever even makes it stateside, of which there are no current plans.)
Prompted but the usual jackasses, I want to mention that the LG Prada, apparently the biggest iPhone competitor, presents a much smaller threat than the pundits are desperately claiming.
We even have a nice little table.
I couldn’t have been a whole lot more incorrect.
My predictions were specifically for Macworld, but apply also to the whole of 2007. I’ll revisit them again at the end of the year, and i think my batting average will greatly improve. :)
I’ll not list out every single prediction, but only mention the relevant ones:
Absolutely Will Happen = 12.5% Accuracy.
Out of the 8 guesses, only one was correct: the demonstration of a working iTV, final product name (I had guessed “Airport Video” but it turned out to be AppleTV), and an availability date. That’s 1 of 8.
