Apple’s New Prosumer Desktop?
This is the first post to this blog – i just couldn’t wait.
I have a friend (who will remain nameless) that just got hired to be an Apple Rep. I think he’ll just be the guy who sets up displays in CompUSAs or something. Anyway, Apple flew him out to Cupertino for the week for training. He’s been out there for a few days now, and just today, while i was in the middle of putting this blog together, i got a Picture Message from him. Three actually.
I was so excited that i just decided this blog looks good enough for now, and it’ll have to go live (in beta) so i can post these images.
It looks like Apple is releasing a smaller cheaper thing that i might have called a “MacProMidget” …but it looks sweet.
So here’s the first delicious image: (i assume that’s the MacPro on the left, and the new MacTower on the right)

More Images after the break!
I’ve called the guy who sent me these images, but he refuses to tell me anything else at all. All i know is that he took these with his cameraphone, and whatever info i can get from the pictures.
Apparently they’re also releasing a 24″ LCD with a built-in iSight… which makes since due to their recent 24″ iMac announcement…

I’m saving up for a 23″ Apple LCD right now, but i’d much rather a 24″ with a built-in iSight! that would be excellent!
And the best image of them all:

It looks to me like it’s basically iMac internals with room for expansion in a sick little case, with only 1 optical drive. …and really that’s basically exactly what i want. the iMac is SOO appealing, but i’m just so drawn to a desktop! internal expandability is so great, and i want whatever huge LCD screen i buy next (probably that 24″ LCD if this is true) to actually be useful when i get a new machine. i couldn’t imagine my 24″ screen being eternally tied to a certain hardware configuration! that would be horrible! (maybe an iMac would be better with a DVI input!)
Maybe this is what Apple has in store for September 12th? I’m all over this if it turns out to be true… all over it.
More than likely it’s just another rumor. …then again i haven’t seen it anywhere yet. Here’s hoping it’s true.

FAKE. its obviously a fake b/c it uses Lucida Grande instead of Myriad Pro
Pat - September 10th, 2006 at 11:33 am
i call bullshit
micahel - September 10th, 2006 at 11:34 am
Doubt it’s real.
Photo’s don’t have the case panel on the side of the “MacTower”. You can see the ledges where the side panel meets up with the rest of the case on the right hand side (looking at the front of it).
Apple doesn’t make mistakes like that. If they have a prototype, then they have a side panel for it. They don’t post information with half-assembled computers.
Besides, the unit is posted 3 times with the same angle. Apple usually gives you a view of the machine in multiple-information pages (they even forgot the side panel 3 times). Garenteed Apple would have shown us the inside of the machine compared to the Mac Pro in the first picture, not some crappy angle shot. Probably because that got garbled with the photoshopping.
And, if it was a “Mac Tower”, it would be smaller length wise. There are no FBDIMM risers (ala Mac Pro), and probably no full-length PCIe slots ether. The MacPro/Quad is a large, heavy machine, and with apple’s recently patented Cube designs, they’ll want to opt for the second release of a Intel Cube with some expansion in it rather then yet another G5 esque unit.
Fake, fakety fake.
Good way to draw traffic to your blog though.

This is not only a fake, it’s a really bad fake.
All three photos show the “MacTower” from the same angle, despite the pictures themselves supposedly being a different angles to the camera.
See here:
http://homepage.mac.com/mwongozi/things/mactower-fake.jpg
David Glover - September 10th, 2006 at 12:17 pm
Jeff… next time, try harder with the fakes. There are numerous errors in the specs, the choice of fonts, but I found the source files for your images very quickly.
You got your two source files for the images here, from two frames in the QTVR:
http://www.apple.com/macpro/gallery/
That’s why the Mac Pro to the left of the “MacTower” is only ever seen with its case off. That’s the only image you could get from that angle.
The second image that you cut down to make the midget MacTower has an error that you inherited from the original QTVR of the Mac Pro. The QTVR, when it swings around the front of the Mac Pro, has the case cover on the right disappear for a few frames… you captured one of these frames to photoshop into the Mac Tower, so your mac tower images also appear to have no case cover on on the right.
Next time, try harder. This is a poor ass fake.
Laughingman - September 10th, 2006 at 12:19 pm
You know, this looks like you just snapped a camera phone picture off from your own Apple Cinema Dispaly. Want to know why?
It looks like backlight bleeding!
Nice try. I’m sure they will uprade the ADC displays this Tuesday though.
Garrison - September 10th, 2006 at 12:21 pm
The iMac does have a DVI out chief, it will drive up to a 23″ display
George - September 10th, 2006 at 12:55 pm
Very astute, “LaughingMan”
Next time, if i ever do this again, i think i’ll try exactly as hard as i did this time. it’s the perfect balance of having fun and not caring about actually fooling people. :) cheers!

dvi IN, george, dvi IN… so that i can use the iMac AS a screen, not use a screen with an imac.

Hey Jeff, thank’s for a great joke, I really enjoyed it, and wish it becomes true (the display anyway) it would make sense for Apple to distinguish themselves from the now two other 30″ display makers by adding webcams, and that would also explain the slashed prices to get the old displays out the door before the new ones arrive.

Jeff, you are a tricky bastard. Our post over on engadget started some wars in the comments sections so we direct them your way, hope you learn your lesson! DONT MAKE FAKE APPLE RUMORS! Our job is hard enough.
PS: Engadget Readers – Keep the comments comming… My favorite is: and I quote “jeff, suck my balls” and who could forget “Fuck you jeff…” Two words for you Jefery! Fuck Off, dont you have something better to do on a Saterday?

Oh Lighten up. Mac users are far too often such a prissy bunch of ninnies.
So you were lured by an obvious fake and got your light loafers all in a wad over it, so now the sissiest of the bunch have to offer up “fuck you’s” and other nastiness rather than laugh it off and go see about getting a life for once.
Time after time, Mac users prove to be the bone-stupidest, most uneducated, and the most curlish of all computer users.

I treat anything about Apple’s upcoming products as a waste of blog space, Jeff’s not that far from a waste of space himself. Leave the oxygen to the rest of us Jeff and stop wasting it on yourself.

Come on, folks. it’s all in good fun. Take your rumors with a grain of salt, like Engadget tells ya to, and wait for Steve-o to get up on stage and make an announcement, like always. Until then, how many rumors have we had pop up that people were firmly convinced of that turned out to be bullshit?
Relax, guys. It’s not like he ran over your assorted dogs, cats and other small furry animals.

[...] Here is another case of Photoshop smart people getting the best of Apple fan boys. Jeff, who made a post on his blog, which was later picked up by Engadget (linked above) created some fake posters of Apple advertisements. Claiming that they were taken via a camera phone from a friend, he posted them on his site and immediately, the comments started flowing in. Pretty much from the beginning people knew they were fake. Honestly, with some of the explanations I read in those comments, you people pay too much attention to Apple ads. [...]
MacTower? Not! at Cory Holt’s Weblog - September 10th, 2006 at 5:53 pm
Hey Jeff, I admit your fake isn’t very convincing, especially considering a large portion of Apple’s audience is in the design industry and will spot the difference between Myriad and Lucida Grande a mile off.
BUT
I agree with Dan (above) – all you wankers that get so tight-arsed about yet another one of these scams should just go get some work done and spend time being productive.
jake - September 10th, 2006 at 6:09 pm

Lemon Drop Kid - September 10th, 2006 at 6:23 pm
While it’s valid that folk’s shouldn’t get worked up about pre-released products, the fact remains that Jeff (and folks like him) are muddying the waters, which in general is not a helpful thing.
So while he’s not the antichrist, and I certainly don’t want him to “suck my ball” as some have suggested (I never understood why someone would think that’s a great put-down…), he’s got my vote for “jackass of the week”.

What’s the real hoax in all of this is that over in the “Call off the Dogs” blog entry, ol’ Jeffy claims he rushed this pathetic shit show because “his girl was coming over.”
For shame, Jeffy. Your mom can’t be “your girl,” man, no matter how much you wanted to marry her when you were five.
And the “coming over” allusion to some sort of booty call loses the lustre when you develop the mental image of Jeff’s darkened bedroom in his parent’s house, complete with Star Wars figurines and anime posters adorning every inch of the space.
No girl that is actually physically human wants to get down on a bunk bed, Jeff. Even if you offer up the top bunk.

Who cares if he posted some ‘fake’ photos of a new computer system. What about the other 1,000,000 people have posted ‘fake’ photos of new products. It was a joke, get over it.
Engadget and other ‘news’ sources are supposed to desseminate between what is real and fake, so they got called on a mistake and are trying to blame the source. Typical Engadget.

Just look at the photos and decide for yourself if you should believe them. There’s no need to be abusive about it.
And shame on you Engadget. If you don’t like comment wars, why are you encouraging them here? Maybe you should actually check something before you post it to decide if it’s fake or not. Surely with the number of fakes you’ve seen you should be able to decide easily.

apple-l - September 11th, 2006 at 6:13 pm
Are you people for real? I mean… what’s with all this hate. Do you people actually think before you type?
Most of these comments are about how much of somebody’s time this attempt at blog hits has wasted. Don’t you think following rumors and speculation of what hunk of glass, plastic and metal that Apple may or may not introduce is a waste of time? (How many rumored products where actually released at the last apple event?)
As much as I love my ibook, powerbook , and imac, everything that Apple or any other company introduces is someday destined for an attic, basement or landfill. I can see being upset if this guy was creating rumors of a device that could allow your little blind sister to see, or cure a relative suffering from cancer…I would be pissed as well, but a computer.
The real waste of time…. Is the time I just took responding to people complaining about what a waste of time this stunt cost them, and to those that may need to contact a suicide help line after being disappointed by yet, another fake apple product rumor.
If these regular apple rumor events are as important as a lot of you make them seem…. It’s time to take another look at what’s really important in life. Because unlike a lot of you apparently, I chose to waste time I could be using for sleep to respond to what I hope is not the mental picture developing in the minds of non mac users or potential switchers of what mac users are like after reading some of these post. In the end, as much as you hate this guy, you’ve given him exactly what he wanted, hits for HIS new blog.
And for that Jeff…I applaud you.

Interessante discussie hier!
Well done Jeff! (ik had even geen zin om mee te doen)
